MUU Posted 10 September , 2022 Share Posted 10 September , 2022 I wonder if anyone can help me understand what rules/laws were broken in bringing about the fining of men by Magistrates for buying and selling in relation to a...pair of slippers (shoes) from a soldier guarding the Marconi wireless station at Carnarvon (as it was then spelled)? Rather amusing story! Thanks.
Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 10 September , 2022 Share Posted 10 September , 2022 Presumably they were military items. Griffith was fined 5s for buying the slippers from Jones. Pritchard was fined (amount unclear, it looks like 1p - can't say if that means £1) for buying shoes/boots worth 12/3d from Roberts.
MUU Posted 10 September , 2022 Author Share Posted 10 September , 2022 Thanks! Yes, in wading through years' worth of papers, I missed the 'Milwrol' in the title. Selling army-supplied shoes!

MUU Posted 10 September , 2022 Author Share Posted 10 September , 2022 It was reported in the September 21 edition of Yr Herald Cymraeg (p.8) A somewhat fuller account appears a week later: https://newspapers.library.wales/view/4025145/4025146/23/slippers AND marconi, slippers When you get into the meat of articles about the Marconi stations in north Wales, there's a hell of a lot to learn! Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 10 September , 2022 Share Posted 10 September , 2022 I see there was a Marconi Eisteddfod in Waenfawr.
geraint Posted 10 September , 2022 Share Posted 10 September , 2022 (edited) Why would a person be fined for buying slippers? I can't open the MUU's link. The original cutting doesn't state that they were military slippers (were there any?) Why would a civilian police court deal with a military matter? The second case of another person buying boots worth 12/- may well be a case of stolen military equipment. By the way. There was a Marconi station in Tywyn, Gwynedd, and the Marconi bungalows and mast are still there. Edited 10 September , 2022 by geraint
KizmeRD Posted 11 September , 2022 Share Posted 11 September , 2022 The two Marconi wireless stations operated in tandem, one for transmitting (Waunfawr) and the other for receiving (Tywyn). MB
