PaulC78 Posted 31 August , 2022 Share Posted 31 August , 2022 (edited) Budleigh Salterton Church Cemetery, aka St Peter's Burial Ground, in East Devon. There are twenty war graves here, including seven from WW1. These photos were taken at the end of June, it was only a flying visit and I didn't have time to cover the whole churchyard. https://www.cwgc.org/visit-us/find-cemeteries-memorials/cemetery-details/37346/budleigh-salterton-church-cemetery/ Edited 31 August , 2022 by PaulC78
PaulC78 Posted 31 August , 2022 Author Share Posted 31 August , 2022 On the inside wall of the lychgate was this curious memorial to Lieutenant Thomas Edward Coney Fisher: Fisher's official commemoration is on Thiepval Memorial: https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/752034/thomas-edward-coney-fisher/ The epitaph on the headstone reads: His name liveth for evermore / He lies in an unknown grave / near Beaumont Hamel in the / Dept. of the Somme, France The plaque reads: The grave from which this / headstone was brought, was / found after an interval of / 9 years to be that of another / officer of the same name. It's not obvious which grave the headstone was originally placed on, I can see no officers named T Fisher buried in the UK, unless it came from overseas. Jim Strawbridge Posted 31 August , 2022 Share Posted 31 August , 2022 One of my lady's is also there with a private headstone. Harriet Barton, Voluntary Aid Detachment, died March 1919. Coincidently, I have to go back to the cemetery within the next two weeks to find the grave of James Lackington for a talk that I am to give to the Devon and Exeter Numismatic Society but that's another story. Funny you should say... Harriet Barton was originally recorded on the IWGC's Grave Registration Report Form, but the name is struck out and this is therefore not a war grave. PaulC78 Posted 31 August , 2022 Author Share Posted 31 August , 2022 Burried in the plot adjacent to Barton is Henry Clare Miles MM, who died on 26 April 1920, age 62. His age is not stated on the headstone and I initially thought that the MM was for "Military Medal", but I suspect it is actually "Master Mariner". I don't know if there is any WW1 connection. TEW Posted 31 August , 2022 Share Posted 31 August , 2022 Skip to bottom of post Regarding Fisher. Does this not seem like a body identified as TECF had a cemetery burial presumably in France with this headstone. At some point it was realised the grave was not TECF's. Original stone to TECF offered or requested to/by parents. I doubt there was another TECF to muddy the waters with an ID. Could be another Fisher but with a different date of death. The headstone in Budleigh should have a stencil that would show the original cemetery, row and stone number. This would be below ground level so probably not a good idea to check without permission. Alternatively, the GRRFs, Headstone Schedules or possibly concentrations for cemeteries used near Beaumont Hamel should really have something regarding the TCEF & headstone conundrum. Ahh!! Found him. Muddled with 2nd Lt. E Fisher 8th East Lancs. died 16/11/16. His GRRF has TCE crossed out. CWGC records. https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2148853/eddie-fisher/
PaulC78 Posted 31 August , 2022 Author Share Posted 31 August , 2022 Last one and a possible case of non-commemoration. Private Edward Walley, 13170, Royal Defence Corps, discharged on 27 July 1916 and died on 15 August 1921, age 46, from Banti's disease aggravated by military service. Born at Derby in 1875, he was a Private in the Royal Marine Light Infantry from 1892 until invalided in 1905. It's a slightly dubious case, but he has been put forward for commemoration anyway.
