Raster Scanning Posted 29 August , 2022 Share Posted 29 August , 2022 (edited) Not all men died as a result of enemy action. "While fishing with Nicholls one evening, the naked body of a man in the full 'knees bend' position, drifted down the stream with the top of his head bobbing up and down. Some men in a boat got the body ashore and it was found to be one of D Coy's men." Extract from the diary of 2/Lt. H J Cartwright, 7th Bedfordshire Regiment. 21-5-1916. This man was Pte. Frederick Edmund James Groves, 'D' Coy 7th Bedfordshires who drowned while bathing in the Somme River, near the bridge on the Bray/Froissy road. My Collection.
