hoppo1 Posted 14 August , 2022 Share Posted 14 August , 2022 My Wife's Uncle recently passed away and we came across this photo which was one of his. It just says Doug on the back (his name). He was in the Sherwood Foresters for 12 years and we know he was at one point posted in Berlin at Spandau. I think I can just about make out Thalkirchdorf on the left hand side writing on the wall but despite best efforts am unable to confirm if this is there or not Would anyone be able to assist with where the photo was taken and also translation of the writing on the walls? Thanks Phil.
JWK Posted 14 August , 2022 Share Posted 14 August , 2022 (edited) Thalkirchdorf in Bavaria https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalkirchdorf The fallen heroes of the municipality of Thalkirchdorf, from the wars 1870-71 1914-18 1939-45 “Remember your dead, oh people” Not the peace that makes the cold embers cling together out of hatred. Give us the peace that, with their blood, the young warriors sealed in battle. Is how I would translate it. Thalkirchdorf is a ski-resort, so maybe Doug took in some skiing there post WW2? Picture of the Denkmal was clearly taken in winter. Edited 14 August , 2022 by JWK
hoppo1 Posted 15 August , 2022 Author Share Posted 15 August , 2022 Thanks JWK the big dollop of snow didn't help. We know he skied when in Canada so it's probable he did while posted to Germany. Thanks for the translation as well.
