stevehowarth Posted 25 March , 2005 Share Posted 25 March , 2005 Hi Private Alan Aylwin of 14 Bt. Royal Sussex Regiment has the number 'SD/5363'. Could anybody tell me what 'SD' stands for and does the number give any indication of when he joined the battalion? I would really appreciate a SDGW look up on Aylwin. He died 4-3-1918 and is buried in Fittleworth, Surrey. Cheers Steve
Chris_Baker Posted 25 March , 2005 Share Posted 25 March , 2005 It stands for South Down. The 14th Bn was the reserve unit for the three volunteer battalions that were subtitled South Down; that is, the 11th, 12th and 13th Bns. Have a look at http://www.1914-1918.net/sussex.htm
Sue Light Posted 26 March , 2005 Share Posted 26 March , 2005 Steve The number is fairly late. Try the forum for the South Down battalions of the Royal Sussex Regiment at: Royal Sussex Regiment South Down battalions It's quiet, but I'm sure you'll get an answer if there's any to be had. Paul Reed Posted 26 March , 2005 Share Posted 26 March , 2005 You'll also find a bit more about them on my site at: http://battlefields1418.50megs.com/royalsussex.htm By his number, he was one of the last of the "original" SD enlistments and it puts him into the Summer/Autumn of 1915.
