Hi Trevor,

John Coulter was awarded the 1914 Star after disembarkation on the 6th October 1914 as well the VM and BWM of course. Neither Medal Rolls record any further information other than 2nd Battalion on the VM and BWM roll.  Listed on his Register's of Soldiers' Effects is his father Robert. On one of the Pension Index Cards John's mother is the claimant, Margaret Coulter of 9 Burn Street, Balmuir by Glasgow.

Trevor, just to add a little information if you didn't have it already, this is the transcript from the reports dated 18/05/15 and 26/06/15 British Red Cross and Order of St John Enquiry List, Wounded and Missing, 1914-1918.

Also attached is the article from the Sunday Post 11th September 1921 mentioning forty nine local men. Could it be that John had moved away by the time he enlisted?

This is a “general overview” reply -

After the war local War Memorial Committees were formed in many localities to raise funds for the erection of a memorial go local men - either casualties only or to include all men who served.

They were civilian bodies that did not have access to military records. They placed local adverts for the names of men to be nominated to be named on the memorial.

There are various reasons why men are not recorded on a memorial - such as

Some NOK declined to put names forward.

Some NOK had left the locality before the request for names was circulated. My ggm had left Bedlington by 1920 so her 2 KIA sons are not recorded on the town memorial there but they are recorded on the local church memorial.

hi Steve

thanks for your reply

i understand the difficulty when things were recorded after the war

but i do find it annoying that their are 49 names listed on the plaque

and he and maybe others born in old KILPATRICK are not

ITS LIKE THEY WERE FORGOTTEN  BY THERE LOCAL COMMUNITY AFTER THE WAR
