I don’t think so.  IIRC insulin treatments only date from the early 1920s.

Correct. Insulin was discovered in 1921 by Frederick Banting and Charles Best in Toronto. It was first used as a treatment a year later.

I had a great-great uncle who served in the South Lancs Regt who died of diabetes in 1895 so I'd done some cursory investigation.

There are two types of diabetes - As noted above Insulin dependent diabetes only treatable after discovery of insulin in 1921 (first used in humans 1922) otherwise it was universally fatal, but the second type (Non-insulin dependent diabetes) was long known to be a cause of ill-health especially with obese people so that "less severe" form was treatable by weight loss and improved diet etc.
