(Merci, Google translate:))

I always thought the photo showed men of the Royal Fusilers at Mons on 22/08/14.

I think the caption of the photo is not correct, none is still wearing a helmet, if you look closely it is not a Canadian cap-badge on the soldier's cap, a date error, I think has a regiment!! at rest in 1914. I know very well Mr. Yves Bourdon historian of the Great War, he can tell us about this photo.

Where has that caption come from?

This is quite a well known picture. I used google translate for the caption on the copy in the UK Imperial War Museum in my original response.

"Troops of the A Company, 4th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (7th Brigade, 3rd Division) resting in the Grand Place, Mons. On the following day the Battalion won two Victoria Crosses (Lieutenant Maurice Dease and Private Sidney Godley) on the canal bridge at Nimy, two miles north of Mons."

Dease and Godley won their Victoria Crosses on the 23rd August 1914, so that would date the picture to the 22nd.

None of those pictured would be wearing a helmet as these weren't introduced until 1916.

Cheers,
Peter
