I have come into possession of a Death Plaque with the name Herbert Dunn

I have searched military records and have found numerous Herbert Dunns who sadly lost their life during World War 1.

Is there any way of identifying which soldier it belongs to.

It Came in an envelope with the number 427864 on the front.

The short answer is no.  I believe 427864 to be a reference number.

A search of CWGC shows only 3 casualties named "Herbert Dunn". , one officer and (8th Cameronians ), and two privates (Lancashire, and Northumberland Fusiliers).  Where in the country you purchased the plaque may make one candidate more likely than the others but would not be conclusive.

the only real way of finding out is to find the custodians of the other medal and plaque groups, one of which will be missing a plaque.

there are 3 Herbert's and 11 H Dunn. without looking through the records and rolls to remove which H are not Herbert , it may not show how many in total.

questions.. Do you want to keep it? then search the internet for his medals and collect paperwork.

if you dont want to keep it, then advertise on ebay or the BMF forum, there is a member looking for plaques to any christian name Dunn recipients.

SDGW list three private Herbert Dunn's and one officer Herbert Dunn totalling four

the third not on GWF1967 list above is

listed as H Dunn on CWGC

427864 is the plaques unique production reference number.   It would have been sent out to the next of kin Jul/Aug/Sep 1921 a few examples with reference numbers close to it.
