Struggling with a word on the attached grim entry in the 2/Camerons diary 11/1/1915

"Mud in trenches terrible & presented severe menace? to general safety - ?????? 2 men who fell forward in it & could not move & were suffocated."

It might just be. I was seeing witness but witnessed makes much more sense.

I think just 'witness'.
Used in an archaic form meaning "For instance"  or " An example being".

I think it derives from the archaic "Witness the fact that...", meaning "Look at the fact that..."

I don't think it means that the writer actually observed the event himself. (Otherwise surely he would have tried to intervene and recorded that too?)

That also makes sense. Dreadful events at any rate and shows how dreadful conditions were at this stage.
