  • 2 weeks later...

Finally have a decision and as per the below, unfortunately2nd Lt. Aitken does not qualify  for commemoration...

We have now received an adjudication from the military service authorities regarding your non-Commemoration case submission (NC 11712) for Second Lieutenant Frank Douglas Aitken.

They have instructed us that this individual does not qualify for commemoration as a Commonwealth War Casualty, according to the CWGC’s Eligibility Criteria.

It is appreciated that the evidence supplied showed 2nd Lt. Aitken was suffering from General Debility upon demobilisation. However, the Adjudication Board ruled that a conclusive link could not be made between his cause of demobilisation and cause of death with the available historical evidence.

We appreciate that this decision will likely come as a disappointment, but we hope you can understand the need to apply our criteria consistently and in line with decisions that military authorities came to at the time, ensuring everyone is treated equally

Ah well - probably better to have submitted and lost than to have never submitted once you had spent on the DC.

Though, as you have commented before, it does seem a bit unusual for there to be a Memorial Plaque - of course those came from a source other than CWGC so perhaps different levels of proof required and/or more evidence available to them back then.  ???

AITKEN's Memorial Plaque is still puzzling me. ???

MP were instructed/issued via the War Office to to the two plaque factories at Acton and Woolwich

MP and Scrolls to be sent out according to Army Form W.5080 [which listed living NoK] - so presumably the Army was satisfied his death was due to his war service.

For info: His Officers Papers at TNA currently indexed as AITKIN https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C1163952

= Any mention of his memorial plaque and/or scroll in those papers?
