per ardua per mare per terram Posted 23 March , 2005 Share Posted 23 March , 2005 He was grade 4 (lowest of the low). I’m guessing that you have his 14/15 star as he is likely to have been promoted before the war was over. There is a previous thread on artificers. Where have you looked for his details? His record of service should be in ADM 188/1047 and medal roll in ADM 171/117.
DirtyDick Posted 23 March , 2005 Share Posted 23 March , 2005 There was actually a rank of Engine Room Artificer 5 upon embarkation of training. Ranks went ERA 5 to ERA1 and then Chief ERA (CERA). Basically, artificers are skilled technicians and fixers of all things electrical, mechanical and hydraulic (and now computers and other electronics) and received higher basic pay than most other CPOs, POs, etc. His M series service number indicates he joined the RN post 1908, and given that his number is M14965, he probably joined about the time of the outbreak of the War or a little afterwards. As already stated, his ADM188 - 'office' copy of service - is almost certainly available at the PRO/NA/ Richard
