Abbreviation on War Diary

Hi Everyone

I have come across the abbreviation SO in the war diary of the 8th East Yorks, as in,

'A party of officers under the SO was sent forward to take over the area allotted.'

Does anybody know what this stands for.

Could it be Signals Officer perhaps sent forward to establish and maintain communications ?

Since this followed from a COs conference at Div HQ the staff officer rather than signal officer would seem more probable?

Thanks for the replies everyone. Staff Officer was my first thought, I suspect that is what it means.
