Naval Graves Project - Australia

Mark NGP

Recommended Posts

Hello,  Just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself, I am Mark and I started up the Naval Graves Project in Australia. We are a group of mostly former Royal Australian Navy men and women who "Research, Record & Remember"  all naval graves within the country.  Of course we haven't located them all nothing like it, so far the database contains 3000 records, mostly RAN and RN but with other Allied  Navies and some of our former enemies. We are not just WW1, we cover from Forby Sutherland of HMS Endeavour buried in Botany Bay by Lt Cook to the current times.  If you have a lost sailor  in Australia please feel free to contact me, I am not saying we will have them in the Database or that we can 100% locate them but we will try.  Our site is on Facebook as The Naval Graves Project all are welcome to join.

Mark - I'm glad you've brought this up, as I've just realized I have yet another unfinished project!

Over the years I've added thousands of grave/plaque photos of WW1 Vets to their profiles on the Discovering Anzacs website: https://discoveringanzacs.naa.gov.au/

But just having a quick look at the first few I've given you from my database - it appears I may not have added all the RAN photos.

So, instead of uploading them to dropbox and sending you a link which I thought I'd do - I'll now go through and add those I've missed (which could be all!!) - and I'll post the links here.

You are then free to download a copy of the photos and use as you wish - I have no worries about copyright.

Cheers, Frev

Thank you so much. We have archives for 3000 men and women nationwide but that's just a drop in the ocean. Your work will be of great help. I have someone working on a converting our custom database so we can host online. Once done our records will be available free to search.  Thank you for all your efforts on Discovering ANZACs.

Frederick George Bollard (1887-1919) accrued 59 days of service and subsequent honourable medical discharge from the Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train (Reinforcements), from December 1916 to February 1917. All of this time was spent in Australia. Thereafter, he subsequently re-enlistment for Home Service duties, from March 1917 to June 1918.

In the manner that Labour Corps fatalities are, in some instances, commemorated by the CWGC and associated with their county infantry regiment in which they previously served, Bollard is associated with the RANBT rather than the 4th Military District Reserve Guard at Mitcham Army Camp.

He is interred at Adelaide Cemetery.

Hi Keith, Thank you. We have Frederick in our records from the CWGC register however we have not been able to verify his service as our file under service record is marked no file found.  Did you find his record at National Archives? The Bridging Train is always an interesting topic

Hi Mark,
It appears that he has no AIF service record within series B 2455 but does have a record in series MT 1486. Hope you can make use of the following link
https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/ViewImage.aspx?B=6530256

There will be a number of ex-RANBT men who died and are buried in Australia. I did research a heap of these men, but had omitted 100 or so.

Keith, Thank you the link worked. That's great work, well done. Do you know Greg Swinden? He has done a a lot of research on them as well.  We find so many buried under their army rank, makes sense really given they ended the war as army not navy.  Are you familiar with Norbert Joseph McCrory pre WW1 Navy, got out  then ex RANBT, ex Artilleryman, returned to navy and took part in the Zeebrugge Raid ? We located him In Rookwood Cemetery and gave his grave a tidy up...he'd be due again by now.

Well, well, it was through Zeebrugge that I came across McCrory, which led me to RANBT. Yes, so many of them transferred to the AIF after disbandment. I have heard of Greg, but not had any dealings with him as such. Hope the e-mail message got through okay to you.

Hi Keith,

The RANBT is a fascinating topic, so little known. Greg is a good bloke, worth getting to know. The Navy Seapower Centre will forward any RANBT related material to him. I gave the research on the RANBT to some other members as I've been writing a custom database for our archives and going over our photographic collection . But I do not think they have made much progress, I will need to get back onto it. I appreciate your help and Frev's as well, the forum is a great place.  The navl Graves Project has taken on a huge task but the heritage was slowly sipping away with headstones  weathering and in some cases tenure of the grave site not renewed. we have in excess of 3000 records. While we are a nationwide group, I am based in Sydney and started it all off in Rookwood Cemetery, we have published a field Guide to the Cemetery with 677 naval graves . That includes any naval graves, of course RAN, RN and Allied  but we also have Imperial German pre WW1. Austro Hungarian, US Civil War and Pakistani sailors.
