Remembered Today:

DSM for Zeebrugge Raid - surviving citation?

There has been a recent mention of Able Seaman Thomas Tusler, who was awarded a DSM for his participation in the Zeebrugge Raid.

London Gazette, 19 July 1918, Supplement 30807, Pages 8591-3

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/30807/supplement/8592

Of the files at Kew, are there any that are likely to contain a citation for him and others?

Is the following worth perusing?

Reference: ADM 116/1811
Description:

Zeebrugge and Ostend April-May 1918 - HONOURS and AWARDS

Date: 1918-1919
Held by: The National Archives, Kew
Former reference in its original department: Case No. 573

Thanks
Keith

Thanks Keith, Ivor, the additional info is much appreciated

According to ADM 171/61 p280 he was presented his medal by HM the King. Would this have been a one on one presentation or as part of a group?

Given it was the King would there be any photographs from that day in the records anywhere?

Hi Steve,

Presentations at Buckingham Palace usually involved a large number at a time. There are often newspapers reports stating the number of awards, but only a few names get mentioned, e.g. VCs. Newspapers sometimes photograph service personal outside afterwards.

Thanks Ivor, I will take a trawl through the newspapers around that date. Does that mean that because the king was involved it would normally mean it was done at Buckingham Palace?

Usually at the Palace, but sometimes smaller groups at places he happened to visit, especially just post WW1.

One newspaper report of a Palace investiture (BNA image):

Hi Steve.

Photos were taken of the King presenting Zeebrugge/Ostend decorations on a visit to the Grand Fleet in July 1918 but I've only seen 4 or 5, with only one named. I attach an example.

While the ADM 137/3894 file has some citations, those from D Company who received DSMs or MIDs have none as most of the officers on Iris were killed or wounded and therefore no report was submitted on D company.

An account by Tusler is included in ADM116/1656 in the reports on individual casualties. Where the fate of any rating was unknown, witnesses who were able to help were asked to provide any details that might help. Tusler provided an account of the fate of a man called Cowley who was killed. Often they give an insight into what the writer experienced during the raid, although I do not have a copy of those particular accounts.20220228_124310.jpg.a422fb857adb897d9f23c57743277631.jpg

PS After seeing the mention of Simon Eyre's DSM book I bought a copy. What a tremendous tome...
