Please advise where/how to find out which Airfields in France my grandfather served at as Sub Fl Lt in RNAS 2 squadron.I know he was based at Dunkirk in December 1917 but wonder if he also was at Bray Dunes or St Pol.

Fleet Air Arm Museum not currently offering research/archive enquires though this may change in near future

Meanwhile I have a day trip to Northern France next month (March 2022) to visit the area his plane crashed after being shot down March 1918.(Pervyse)and the cemetery where his gunner is buried.

Thank you

Tim,

2 sqn RNAS located at St Pol up until 25th January 1918

Bergues  from 26th Jan 1918

became 202 Sqn RAF on 1st April 1918

Varssenaere from 20th Nov 1918

I assume you don't need earlier or later history?

Thank you so much! That's brilliant! I had a feeling that my grandfather was at St Pol as soon as I read about StPol in Mike O Connors book! Then I read this in "I Chose the Sky" by Tich Rochford see extract attached (copywriteGrub Street Classics)and I can just see Bam as he was later called playing snowballs.

Bergues airfield doesn't feature in O Connors book sadly. Shame.

Here also attached is a wonderful map from 1927 bought at local boot fair.from an Atlas published by The Times.

Thank you once again!
