Remembered Today:

Saddle Post and Tolmans Post locations

Peter Beckett

Recommended Posts

I am researching a soldier from Glengarry, Vic who was in the 8th ALH and according to the War Diaries was at Saddle Post or Tolmans Post.

Can  anyone help me with the location as I don't have any decent maps of Gallipoli, please?

Cheers

Peter

Hi Peter,

I can find no map of the Sazli Beit Dere area that gives the location of either Saddle or Tolmans Posts. The only guess I can make based upon the scant details from within the various unit war diaries would put both somewhere along the defensive line bounded by Destroyer Hill, out to Antill's Lookout in the South, and up along Canterbury Slope to the East.

Without the Glengarry, 8th LH mans name, it is impossible to state which Post he would have been allotted to, as 'A' Sqdn is recorded as taking over Saddle Post on the 15th November, and the 3rd LH Bgde, 'B' & 'C' Sqdn's went to Tolmans Post, also on the 15th. The 3rd LH Regt at Destroyer Hill handed over both Posts to the 3rd LH Bgde, Tolmans Post at 1800 on the 11th, and Saddle Post on the 12th. The 8th LH Regt war diary records that the Saddle Post was taken over from the 3rd LH Regt line (Saddle Post to Antill's Lookout, exclusive) at 0900, 14th Nov. That would seem to indicate that the Saddle Post would have been somewhere between Destroyer Hill and Antill's Lookout, western end of the Canterbury Slope, but that seems a strange place for it to be.

Afraid that is the best I can do, hope someone else maybe able to give a more definite location.

Hi Jeff,

He was in the 10th Reinforcements that arrived on the 8th December 1915 ( I think as I am still trying to make sense of his record) On further checking he joined the Anzac Advance Base on Mudros on the 4th December 1915 and the next entry has him at the (52nd )Lowland Casualty Clearing Station at Mudros on the 13th December 1915 so if he made it to Anzac and either Post he was only there for a few days. His records are not clear on his medical record and he was transferred to the Signal Corps for the rest of the War.

He was Stirling George Crowe 1256

Peter,

The case as to whether Stirling Crowe did indeed land at Gallipoli has become even more complicated, it is most probable that he never left Mudros, but there is one very slight possibility that he did land on the 8th December.

The 8th LH Regt War diary for the 8th December does record that Lieut L. A. W. MacPherson, 10th Reinforcements joined the 8th, with one other rank. As to who that other rank was has eluded me so far.

A search of the service records of all 53 men who embarked with 10th Reinforcements has given no clue as to which man was the other rank who arrived with Lieut MacPherson.

It has however given the answer to the circumstances of the movement of the 10th Reinforcements, and that the vast majority of men went into ‘B’ Sqdn, 8th LH Regt on the 18th December 1915 at the Anzac Advanced Base on Mudros. The unit embarked from Ghezireh, Egypt, on board the “Helouan” 1/12/15, disembarking at Mudros on the 4/12/15. It also transpires that all 53 men were taken on strength of the 10th Reinforcements at Melbourne on the 8/9/15 prior to embarking on board the HMAT “Ballarat” on the 9/9/15.

This brings me back to the case of Trooper Crowe, his service record, as is the case with all of the other men, gives no indication of him landing at Anzac, Gallipoli. So there is the possibility that he might have been Lieut MacPherson’s other rank, but that also applies all the other 52 men. It is rather frustrating trying to get the mans name for my records as well.

Lieut MacPherson was a member of the last 8th LH Regt party to leave Anzac Cove on the night of 20th December after being there for 12 days.

Jeff,

I think we can cross him off as the one soldier who was at Tolmans Post. I have extracted this info from his records

(He joined the Anzac Advance Base on Mudros on the 4th December 1915 from Alexandria. On the 13th December 1915 he was admitted to the 52nd Casualty Clearing Station (1st Lowland) at Mudros and discharged to the Anzac Advance Base at Mudros on the 3rd January 1916)

Hi Jeff,

I found this letter in John Lalor's record 1282 (page 8) and describes who went ashore at Gallipoli

Hi Jeff,

Glad to help although it was a bit of a diversion from Stirling Crowe

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the confirmation of Tpr Maher being Lieut MAC Pherson’s Batman, I should have picked up on that earlier.

Per chance, do you have any thoughts on the actual location of Saddle & Tolmans Posts along the Cheshire Slop front line?

I did a search of CEW Bean's Anzac books, Vol I -1st Phase, Vol I- Medical Services Gallipoli and Vol II - 1915  (I have them in PDF format) for Tolmans, Saddle and post and nothing that was relevant came up

No ref to either post in Waite's NZ o/h or Pugsley"Gallipoli, the NZ Story".

But the Otago Mounted Rifles did train in NZ on a  Saddle Hill - cannot see ref in the recent OMR history to Saddle Post,  but have not looked at war diary

Peter,

Just working through some old digital research and discovered a file of Gallipoli place names which I copied in the UK several years ago.

Tolman's Post is located at the West End of Rhododendron Spur. There is no mention of Saddle Post.

Ref is PRO WO 157 - 684 Appx OC 14.

Good luck with your research.

Hi Rt,

That's interesting as in CEW Beans Vol II -1915 on page 877, he has the 8th Light Horse and others at Rhododendron with 38 in the party and last withdrawal time at 2:15am

Peter,

It might be worth the effort to look up Brudenell White's evacuation plans for Anzac.

I'm fairly sure there is a copy at the AWM, or perhaps one of our members has a copy.

R.

A search of the 3rd LH Bde and 8th LH Regt war diaries do have mention of both Saddle and Tolmans Posts, but neither give an substantive indication as to their exact location. The 3rd LH Bde war diary for December 1915, at pages No. 24 & 25 does mention 'Saddle Post'  as the 'Brigade Starting Point', Appendix A. 22 & 23. Those are the last mention of either post in the diary.

From the letters, diaries and manuscripts of officers and men of the brigade and regiments there has also been no description as to the posts locations, bar one, and that being from the "Sketches at Gallipoli, 1915 Leslie Hore" (Captain Leslie Fraser Standish Hore, "A" Sqdn, 8th LH Regt). Although this sketch was draw in June 1915, from observation from Walker's Ridge, Captain Hore added the place names obviously after December 1915. He has Saddle Post & Tolmans Post between Destroyer Hill and Antill's Lookout along the Western line of Rhododendron Ridge ( Canterbury Slope).

Based upon Captain Hore's Sketch, the only map of the sector that I can find that seems to give an indication of the location of Saddle Post and Tolmans Post, and at a guess would be the following.
