GWF1967 Posted 22 February , 2022 Share Posted 22 February , 2022 Hi, I’m researching Temp. Capt. John Frederick Broughton, M.B., Royal Army Medical Corps. - B 1880, Ontario, Canada. He was awarded the M.C, London Gazette 18/1/18 “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in attending the wounded in an exposed aid post under heavy fire throughout the day. He visited the advanced positions whenever he could to organize his bearers and collect wounded. After the battalion was relieved he stayed in the line all the following day to search for wounded. When the medical officer of a neighbouring battalion became a casualty he passed, from one aid post to the other under heavy fire and, attended to the wounded of both battalions”. Could anyone tell me which battalion he was attached when he won his M.C please?
Ivor Anderson Posted 22 February , 2022 Share Posted 22 February , 2022 (edited) The annotated MC citation may tell you where and when he earned it, and that might help pinpoint the unit. Did he marry in 1908? https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/3657764:1623?tid=&pid=&queryId=1d03614cf0b7684fb227eef0520c199a&_phsrc=WWn572&_phstart=successSource He may appear on an absent voters list c.1918? It might state a unit? 1911: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/2352/images/rg14_25944_0347_03?treeid=&personid=&hintid=&queryId=1d03614cf0b7684fb227eef0520c199a&usePUB=true&_phsrc=WWn573&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&pId=36146787 Born 18th April 1880 (1939 register): https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/11150140:61596 Died 20th Oct 1964? oneandall Posted 1 April Share Posted 1 April Hello GWF1967, A bit late to this thread, but my great grandfather was a stretcher bearer and medical orderly with the 8th Devons who won the MM in Italy a year later (27th October) along with a 'Dr Brampton of London who received the MC'.They rescued a 2nd Gordon Highlander from the River Piave (as quoted from a 1941 newspaper article.) I have researched all the MC awards and there is no Dr Brampton, so I am assuming it's a journalistic error and it's possibly Broughton as the article also misspelled Ginchy as Grouchy and both awards are 26th and 27th October respectively. Kind regards
