michaeldr Posted 18 February , 2022 Share Posted 18 February , 2022 (edited) This officer's record shows that he was “awarded R. H. Society's Bronze Medal and certificate for saving life at loss of ship.” I think that this must have been when HMS Victoria sank after a collision with HMS Camperdown in June 1893. This photograph dates from the Great War. Question: Is that the ribbon which is seen on his right? Thanks in advance for assistance here Edited 18 February , 2022 by michaeldr
RedCoat Posted 18 February , 2022 Share Posted 18 February , 2022 Yes, the RHS ribbon would have been worn on the right side, not the left. Kind regards

michaeldr Posted 18 February , 2022 Author Share Posted 18 February , 2022 The officer was RMLI and the details are given in his ADM record. My apologies for not giving further details, but this question was raised on behalf of someone else. RNCVR Posted 18 February , 2022 Share Posted 18 February , 2022 Thanks Michael, I had not thought of RMLI. As I collected medals to Victoria survivors for many yrs, I wondered. Is it possible for you to post the details from his ADM record?

Appreciate you posting that. Looking at the rolls, there appears to have been 5 RHS Bronze medals (that I can see) awarded for lifesaving in the HMS Victoria incident. - The above RMLI officer - Petty Officer William Johnston (rescuing a bandsman from drowning) - Boy 1st Class William Kerr (rescued Chief Engineer M. Jones) - Lt F.G Loring (rescued Surgeon C. Ford) - Cadet P.D Roberts-West (rescued Commander Jellicoe)

Kind regards I watched "Ships with wings" , 1941 recently, and was mystified by one of the actors (John Clements) playing the part of a Lieutenant in the F.A.A wearing a medal ribbon on his right breast . That clears that up! many thanks.
