WWI Imperial German MG Postcards

For the Moderators, I did look long and hard as to where these could be best placed, where photos and documents did not seem to meet the criteria. So if ok as they are all 'Arms' related and connected to my ''maschinengewehr'' threads so here goes.

Great propoganda!

These are very nice, post cards. Is the large one a poster or a “page” from an old book/magazine?

Great poster that! It would make a nice T-shirt design!

There's a problem with that one - where are the side bolts on the helmets?

Trajan thanks. I would not worry too much. This was sent from the US and is a series of weapon range target images from WWI. I think mostly symbolic…look at the personal kit too!

The 2nd and 5th photo shows Reichswehrsoldaten after 1920 and before 1935.

Thanks Grey! I find the provisonal and the actual Reichswehr transformation business quite interesting!

Hi Julian,

me too. Before the provisional Reichswehr there was even another formation, called the Friedensheer that then became the provisional Reichswehr.

19.01.1919 Friedensheer

05.05.1919 Vorläufige Reichswehr

01.01.1921 Reichswehr

from 01.10.1919-30.09.1920 the army was also called Übergangsheer (transitional army)

Photos of soldiers from the Friedensheer are quite rare (as it was only in existence for approx. 3 1/2 months) and quite interesting as with it were introduced radically different rank insignia. Find attached a photo of a Vizefeldwebel of the Friedensheer.

Good to hear back from you, my old Dunelm survivor!

Thanks. The Friedensheer is a new one for me! If only 3.5 months, well... I had heard of the Übergangsheer, but I don't think that was ever an official name was it?

I know that the expression was used in diplomatic discussions with the allies to denote the phase from the downsizing period to the 100.000 man army. If it was used colloquial or in the press, I can´t say.

Mark F, I promise we won't hijack your thread! Just to note in reply to GreyC, that the early Turkish Republican army also did a big but short-lived change in rank insignia from Ottoman styles. Note also, in the poster Mark F, showed, apart from the lack of studs on the helmets, the guy in the background with an ostensibly 'new style' of pickelhaube.
