Allan1892 Posted 5 February , 2022 Share Posted 5 February , 2022 Trying to assist a friend in identifying which regiment this man served in. It was believed that it was the Irish Lancers but I question the collar badges. Any help greatly received.

FROGSMILE Posted 5 February , 2022 Share Posted 5 February , 2022 (edited) I agree with Jay that he’s 9th (Queen’s Royal) Lancers. Image chart with permission and courtesy of uniformology.com Edited 5 February , 2022 by FROGSMILE
Allan1892 Posted 5 February , 2022 Author Share Posted 5 February , 2022 Thank you both for replying. I can see that the collar badge in the photo fits the 9th Lancers. Frogsmile, thank you for the image chart of collar badges (now saved for future reference) and also the other images.

Your friend might not be entirely misguided because at that time cavalrymen attested into various corps of cavalry, e.g. Dragoons, Hussars, Lancers. It was only after training that they would be sent to a specific regiment within whichever category they had joined. Just as in the infantry, if a man was wounded or sick and sent home to recover, on rejoining he’d be sent to whichever unit of his category was most in need. It’s possible then that the fellow in the photograph might also have served with the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers at some stage in his service. CorporalPunishment Posted 5 February , 2022 Share Posted 5 February , 2022 To my eyes, looking at the angle of the pennons in relation to the title scroll, I'm inclined to think he is 16th Lancers. The buttons also look more like 16th Lancers than 9th Lancers to me. Pete.

FROGSMILE Posted 5 February , 2022 Share Posted 5 February , 2022 (edited) It’s not at all impossible that it might be 16th Lancers, certainly the outline chimes with that, the only thing that went against that on first glance is that the tunic with its plastron appeared to be too dark to chime with the 16th’s famous (and odd man out) scarlet tunic, but that might perhaps be the effects of orthochromatic film Edited 5 February , 2022 by FROGSMILE
