michaeldr Posted 25 January , 2022 Share Posted 25 January , 2022 This is the report of an inspection carried out on 14th January 1916 (not 1915 as typed in error on p.1). It covers an unusual subject (Camel Transport) and as such details may be unavailable elsewhere, I am therefore adding them here. The report is taken from the WD of the Director of Supplies & Transport for the MEF. [January 1916 being the point when the peninsula had been evacuated and the MEF was being wound up and what had previously been their Supply & Transport directorate was about to become involved in the defence of the Suez Canal and the army command in Egypt.]

Guest Posted 25 January , 2022 Share Posted 25 January , 2022 (edited) Mate, This is when many Aussies became first attached to the CTC, many later becoming officers in the ECTC. At this time I have found little on these first five companies, like who commanded them and operated them. During this time I show the quick formation of these companies for operations in the Western Desert, and the operations down in the Sudan, until operations started in the Sinai. This is what I have Formed from WD of the Director of Supplies & Transport (DST and ADT) Jan 1916 first Five companies shown formed already (possibly A,B, C, D and E Companies?) each 2,000 camels of fives sections of 400 camels each April 1916 4-16 ?Co/CTC (3 officers/SNCO & 95 natives + 276 camels) shown att Jif Jaffa raid into Sinai 26-4-16 shown WFF under Gen Dallas and Moblie column under LtCol Lloyd Shropshire Yeo with CTC under Maj Moberley CCo/CTC (600 camels +) moved from Alamein to Moghara June 1916 6-6-16 shown HCo/CTC around Shusha (Samalut) Egypt 9-6-16 CTC convoy (650 camels) move 53rd Div from canal to Romani (Mukhsheib) arrived 14-6-16 July 1916 4-7-16 KCo/CTC shown at Ein el Shams On 21 July, the Egyptian Camel Transport Corps marched out for Romani with 2000 camels, 20 riding dromedaries, 12,000 natives, O.C., Adjutant, 5 Sectional OCs including McPherson, a number of NCOs and the usual attendant details – saddlers, ambulance, vets, batmen, orderlies etc Aug 1916 shown ACo and HCo at Shusha (Samalut) Egypt Sept 1916 9-9-16 LCo/CTC to Anzac MD under OC Lt Lucas to att Div CTC officer Anzac MD 8-9-16 complete by 10-9-16 (part 3 officers 6 SNCO 496 natives 830 camels & remainder 3 officers 5 SNCO 390 natives 700 camels) & (1 SNCO 118 natives 120 camels) total 6 officers 12 SNCO 1004 natives 1650 camels) Oct 1916 7-10-16 Part GCo/CTC (1 officer 2 SNCO 280 natives 444 camels) & part MCo/CTC to Shusha (Samalut) (252 camels) 7-10-16 part GCo/CTC to Samalut (2 officer 5 SNCO 251 natives 462 camels) & part MCo/CTC to Kantara (1 officers 2 SNCO 156 natives 275 camels) 10-10-16 part MCo/CTC to Kantara (1 officers 1 SNCO 141 natives 262 camels) 11-10-16 part GCo/CTC to Samalut (2 officer 4 SNCO 227 men 443 camels) & part MCo/CTC to Kantara (3 officers 65 natives 296 camels) 13-10-16 remainder GCo/CTC to Samalut (3 officers 4 SNCO 253 natives 440 camels) 15-10-16 remainder B sect MCo/CTC to Shusha (Samalut) (2 officers 2 SNCO 218 natives 522 camels) 28-10-16 Part GCo/CTC from Shusha (Samalut) to Kantara (1 officer 1 SNCO 110 natives 255 camels) 28-10-16 Part GCo/CTC from Shusha (Samalut) to Kantara (1 SNCO 120 natives 275 camels) 29-10-16 Part MCo/CTC from Shusha (Samalut) to Kantara (1 officer 1 SNCO 140 natives 302 camels) 30-10-16 Part GCo/CTC from Shusha (Samalut) to Kantara (3 officers 3 SNCO 222 natives 563 camels) 31-10-16 Part MCo/CTC from Shusha (Samalut) to Kantara (2 officer 3 SNCO 149 natives 269 camels) Just to show some of the men that went throw them, here is what I have on A Company CTC Alexander CQMS No1 CTC depot to ACo/CTC 4-17 possibly WE Alexander Royal Army Service Corps (T4/037665) Andrews Lewis Yelland 705 CQMS ACo/CTC 2-16 MID - reason not stated disch to Egyptian CTC prom 2/Lt Adjt to Maj Bentwich to Capt Royal Army Service Corps later British district commissioner for Galilee OBE reported assassinated on there way to church by arabs on 26-9-37 Ex 1 ALHR AIF Ashley William SE/13437 Vet/Sgt att No2 CTC depot to ACo/CTC 1-18 shown S/Sgt to TCo/CTC 5-18 Ex Army Veterinary Corps Best Frank 43 CQMS ACo/CTC 2-16 to OCo/CTC 8-17 to SCo/CTC 12-17 to 11Co/3Bn ICC 3-18 Ex 1Bn AIF Biggs Harry 2/Lt No2 CTC depot 10-17 to HCo/CTC 11-17 to ACo/CTC 8-18 Ex Sgt 1/3 County of London Yeo (1704) to Royal Army Service Corps Brooker Arthur H.K.
