Camel Transport Corps as at January 1916

This is the report of an inspection carried out on 14^th January 1916 (not 1915 as typed in error on p.1). It covers an unusual subject (Camel Transport) and as such details may be unavailable elsewhere, I am therefore adding them here. The report is taken from the WD of the Director of Supplies & Transport for the MEF. [January 1916 being the point when the peninsula had been evacuated and the MEF was being wound up and what had previously been their Supply & Transport directorate was about to become involved in the defence of the Suez Canal and the army command in Egypt.]

This is when many Aussies became first attached to the CTC, many later becoming officers in the ECTC.

At this time I have found little on these first five companies, like who commanded them and operated them.

During this time I show the quick formation of these companies for operations in the Western Desert, and the operations down in the Sudan, until operations started in the Sinai.

This is what I have

April 1916

26-4-16  shown WFF under Gen Dallas and Moblie column under LtCol Lloyd Shropshire Yeo with CTC under Maj Moberley CCo/CTC (600 camels +) moved from Alamein to Moghara

June 1916

6-6-16  shown HCo/CTC around Shusha (Samalut)  Egypt

9-6-16  CTC convoy (650 camels) move 53rd Div from canal to Romani (Mukhsheib) arrived 14-6-16

July 1916

4-7-16  KCo/CTC shown at Ein el Shams

On 21 July, the Egyptian Camel Transport Corps marched out for Romani with 2000 camels, 20 riding dromedaries, 12,000 natives, O.C., Adjutant, 5 Sectional OCs including McPherson, a number of NCOs and the usual attendant details – saddlers, ambulance, vets, batmen, orderlies etc
