Remembered Today:

Military Medal: Sjt Albert L Raggett 9448 1st Btn E.Yorkshire Regiment

Edward Raggett

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am doing research on my Great Grandfather Sjt (at time of award) Arthur Leonard Raggett whom received a military medal in WWI published in the Edinburgh Gazette Thursday 24 August 1916, Issue 12976, Page 1493.

Through discussions with my father, the story goes that in battle he [single handedly] captured a machine gun nest/bunker before moving on to capture a second. Not sure how accurate this is?!

Would appreciate any help to know if there are any records that document the reason why he was awarded the Military Medal

  • Gazette publication of MM award: Here
  • Notice of Military Medal: Here
  • British Army WW1 Medal Rolls Index Card (MM): Here & Phot attached

I also cannot find record of his attestation (Pte) nor discharge documentation (WOII) if anone can help with this?

Thank you for any help in advance!

Great to have a GF who won the MM. Glad you value his history. Hope you have his medal to treasure?

I input '9448 Raggett' into the BMF search box but nothing comes up.

He was listed in the London Gazette on 23 August 1916: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29719/supplement/8363

His MM Index Card can be found here: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6210390

His award was likely for an action in June or July 1916. The war diary may shed some light: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7353174

It has over three pages relating to the 1st to 4th July near Fricourt during the Somme.

35 other ranks were killed, 239 wounded and 167 missing in that period (1-4 July).

From 13-17th July they suffered 36 killed, 186 wounded & 126 missing.
