Nurse Clarice Abbishaw - No 10 General Hospital St Adrian, France

Once again using WFA Pension Record as a starting point before checking British Red Cross Record. Home address for Clarice is Wakefield and she was at the 2nd North Hospital Leeds 27.06.1916. She transferred to No. 10 General Hospital France 11.11.1918.

Would anyone be able to add details for ‘Honours Awarded: St Adrian, France’?

Barbara

  • BarbaraG changed the title to Nurse Clarice Abbishaw - Honour Awarded St Adrian, France

Maybe they just ran out of room and it’s a continuation from the lines above ?

ie no awards ?

Thank you Coldstreamer - obvious really. Now know details for Hospital. (🤔 maybe I felt she deserved an award)

Sometimes it’s easy to get excited and miss what in hindsight was really there

Checking the location of the hospital should confirm

Barbara,

Clarice was awarded the British War Medal and British Victory Medal, the same medals that most soldiers received.

The medal roll is here;- https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/5119/images/41629_626640_11940-00224?treeid=&personid=&hintid=&queryId=a3dd5558586faf84c98dd2b6f3f03e56&usePUB=true&_phsrc=GtI1942&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&_gl=1*166d4qe*_ga*MTE5MjI3NjEyLjE0ODMwMjY1MjY.*_ga_4PXYE4RLH1*MTY0MTU3MzA4Mi44OC4xLjE2NDE1NzMyNDMuMA..&pId=6511033

Her medal index card can be downloaded for free from The National Archives, once you register {also free};- https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6064570

The index card mentions that she was inelligible a Silver War Badge.

If Clarice had arrived in France a day later, on 12th November 1918, she would not have been eligible for the 2 medals mentioned above.

Regards,

Alf McM

You’re absolutely correct Coldstreamer, my apologies.

Thank you Alf McM - I found an index card which referenced the SWB which you mention, dated 25.11.19. Will certainly take a look at the Hospital War Diary.

If she got to France on the 11th could she have got to the unit the same day?

I have no idea on where these places are or the logistics of travelling times

i see no one else joined in next few days so a possibility

This account suggests 10th General Hospital was in Rouen, so it would be within a relatively short distance.
