CATCH-UP AWARDS to PoWs of the TURKISH. (excluding Officers)

With the release of PoWs at the end of 1918, their stories could be told and some rewards were allocated. There were very few for men who had been PoWs of the Turkish- but then there were very few survivors.

Prompted by a couple of recent threads on AO 193 of 1919 and having read Chris Bate's most interesting article in Medal News of Feb 1921 on the subject, I thought I would set out what I have on the subject of awards to ex PoWs in Turkey. My prime interest is for acts whilst PoW .  I've specifically  excluded Defence of Kut and 'Julnar'- see footnote- but have included some other 'in the Field' awards where they fall under AO 193.

I set out below the names and Gazette sources that I have found so far. My approach is to keep this thread for finding new names and to open an individual thread to collate the detailed history of each man (given that there seem to be so few- only c15 for acts, incl escaping , whilst PoW).

I would be most grateful if members would bring to my attention any further names that should be included, together with the Gazette ref.  I'm particularly short, I think, on ex-Gallipoli, on Australians, Indians and on Royal Navy although I appreciate that many of these may have been gazetted during captivity rather than waiting for their release and thus they are not within the scope of this thread.

I will then add the names to this opening post in order to maintain an index. I will link this OP to the detailed thread on the man.

Potential Theatres of capture would be:
   Gallipoli
   Egypt & Palestine
   Mesopotamia

I have excluded Officers as they are generally already very well documented. I have not identified any Indian soldiers yet.

Incidentally Trumpeter Inwood is the only successful escaper of which I am aware!

Thanks in advance

Charlie

These are all for Gallantry at the Battle of Qatia or Katia in Egypt on St Georges Day - 23 April 1916. There is an article pending with medal news on this action along with a roll of POWs.

Thank you for that.. I shall be interested to hear of any tales of their time in subsequent captivity.

Australians listed in London Gazette Supplements under AO193 for PoW work include the following. I've now been through them all to see if any were PoWs of the Turkish. I'm sort of hoping @stevebecker

can double check please.

Hi Charlie,

1146 Pte A H Keating 7th Bn Aust Imp Force                  --- PoW Turkish- Gallipoli

This man was only missing at Lone Pine for a short time. He wasn't a POW. His MM is for escaping from German hands. Captured 9.8.18 and returned to British lines 2.9.18.
His 257 page medical and service docs confirm.

He was obviously a bit of a character as he was disciplined for absenting himself on a number of occasions.

Regards

Chris
