IMBD reviews

Based on the play "The Old Lady Shows Her Medals"  by  J M Barrie, the film is about an unruly Canadian soldier in the Black Watch who while recovering from his wounds in London is introduced to a Scottish widow who has created a fictitious son to impress her three office-cleaner colleagues. The soldier agrees to pretend to be her son. After fighting with British sailors who make fun of his kilt, he contemplates desertion, but is moved by his mother's patriotism to return to the Front.

The film shows its origins as a stage play and doesn't include much action at the Front.  Early on, an extended seven minutes of conversation between the four women soon grated.

Noteworthy for its poignancy and it being Cooper's first talking picture and for his wearing a kilt, which a sailor lifts up to check what if anything is worn underneath.
