Thanking the medical staff.

My grandfather Frederick William Green died in the hospital ship Gloucester Castle on December 15th 1915 on the journey away from Gallipolli.

A matron, Eleanor Inglis write a lovely letter to my grandmother on that day, initially while he was alive but during the writing he sadly died of his gun wounds.

It would be amazing to share that letter with the family of the matron.

Any ideas?

In the 1911 Census she is single (of course) and Matron at the Boys Surgical House. Park Road, Banstead, Surrey (this correlates with her CV on her application). https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBC%2F1911%2FRG14%2F02939%2F0161%2F1 Now to try to find her post war... I see from her records she was still single in 1926 applying for a post in a convalescent home, will look at 1939 register.

Mike

Alf put us on to the nursing record and the rest follows thorugh.

I have found her in the 1939 register, sadly still single a retired nurse living in Gloucestershire https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=TNA%2FR39%2F5122%2F5122C%2F016%2F03

So, to locate family you are going to need to look for children of siblings, if there were any.

The lady died aged 88 still in Gloucestershire, now to look for probate... https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=BMD%2FD%2F1963%2F4%2FAZ%2F000419%2F082

Eleanor had a brother, Gilbert Charles Inglis. He died in 1915 but left a widow, Mary Ann Inglis. Perhaps they had children.  https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/1904/images/31874_222833-00265?pId=3257977

Are you sure about that Alf?

Asking because the 1911 Census has Gilbert living with his widowed mother - Mary A

Edit: I can see where the confusion has arisen now. Mary Ann was Gilbert's mother.

Thanks David,

This explains why I couldn't find his marriage!

Many thanks for your tremendous work on this.

I thought that you might like to see part of the letter that Eleanor sent to my grandmother.

Frederick only 22 years old, died leaving a wife and 3 children, 4, 2 (my dad) and 6 months old. Terrible times!
