It’s unlikely I think.  I do understand what you mean about larrakinism, but the subject of competence with the machine gun, and the visual way that was recognised (with a badge) is something that both the men, and their NCOs, took seriously.  It wasn’t about rigid formality and blind adherence to military protocols, both things that a larrakin digger might eschew, it was about their professional competence as soldiers, and that was something that (by all accounts) they generally respected.

What would've the 9th Light Horse been doing at Gallipoli in October-December 1915? Just defense I imagine. Still, I wonder if he saw the action at the raid in 1916.. I believe Suez Canal raid, might be wrong.

Yes the 9th LHR was used like most of the AIF on Anzac, at different places to fill the gaps between late Aug to Dec 1915. Mostly in the gap between Anzac and Suvla

It fought at a number of actions in 1916, during the defence and later advance across Sinai

His parents moved to the country (which though?) for him to be born. He was said to be born from royalty or something like that, born a "bastard". We knew he served in the war, but which army was a mystery, 'til I got the studio portrait (which I supplied in first post). 
I knew he might've been swedish, due to his features, but I am not an expert.
I Saw this man,
Charles Olson, Dunsterforce, Died Iran, September 1918, looked similar to me, could be wrong.

I tried identifying him on the census, contacting the Lanarkshire history society about who lived at 25 Nelson Road in Glasgow (N.O.K Address) and they said to me

I also suspect that his name doesn't appear on births because 
A. His family wanted him born in a certain country (from the story I was told)
B. He might've been born in a lodging house for all I know.

Her side from my GGF, a Swedish sailor from Ust, an island off the west coast of Sweden.

Her brother was in the AIF, but in the Infantry in France.

Only a nice, 9 after midnight. 
Ah, now, I looked up James Olson 562 on the National Archives Australia, and there is something that relates to him, it's a D2994.. whatever that is. I don't know what's inside of it as there is no "digitization" for it (hasn't been uploaded/scanned). I think they are pay related, but unsure.

Found something. 
I had help reading the "Distinctive marks" bit

"1 Face on left ??? Ship Chest **crossed out** on both fore arms. Scar on nose"
Now, still on his unknown 4th medal track, I think the fourth medal might be a naval medal now.
welp, nothing else on my mind.

I searched through the SA Library for photos for a little project I am doing and came across this

I have another version of this photograph, sent in the first page but in the end, that photograph on the SA Library is obviously 562 Olson.

I was wondering what was on his epaulette below

Obviously 'AUSTRALIA' but what's next to it? I'd assume "L.H.R" or "9.L.H" as per his service in the Light Horse but I am yet to find an example on the AWM for this.

Would it be safe assuming that his photograph is a stray.. or was he involved in the horse show?

I think it’s LH with a separate numeral.  In the image I enclose, it’s a one-piece type that was simpler and more efficient for the ordnance supply chain to sustain.  The number could just be added, which was also more convenient when a man transferred between LH units.

I agree was that FROGSMILE, but now it makes me wonder how the 4th Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron would be shortened down.. probably a layout like the one below

I don’t think that they would have included the ‘MG’, Tank.  Assuming that there were other squadrons of 4 LH, it wouldn’t be usual to mark the MG out separately.

e.g. Generally, it was only when MG companies were merged into a separate and discrete corps that they wore special MG titles, before that they simply wore the ST of the infantry units from whence each MG section came.

The Machine Gun Squadrons were for 4 Light Horse Brigades, so I'd assume they'd be attached to the Brigade to assist in the Regiments. Also, it would make sense that they wore their former regiments like how some people wear insignia from their old regiment like how some old soldiers did in WW2.
I found only one tunic from a Machine Gun Squadron, that being Lieutenant F B Stafford of the 2nd MGS.

Yes that makes sense and in such circumstances the usual protocol would be to wear the shoulder title of the parent unit.

The rank of 'Trooper' doesn't appear within the rank structure of the AIF, though very much in use at the time it just wasn't officially a rank
