Can anyone recommend any good books or articles on the use of railways in WW1, in GB or on the Western Front or both? Scholarly books preferred.

Many thanks in advance.

Reviewed this book by Christopher Phillips last year. It is still available to view for free at the JSTOR link

Can any railway enthusiast confirm that Southern Region received government funding to improve railway lines, services and etc prior to the Great War from London to ensure swift military transportation or provide any sources of information for such a measure - if indeed it is a fact please.

Regards

A few books I have

Railways of the Great War     Michael Portillo
Britain's Railway in World War     JAB HAMILTON
Trains to the Trenches - Men Locomotives and Tracks 1914-1918     Andrew Roden
North Eastern Railway In the First World War     Rob Lanhgham

Portillo's Railways of the Great War and Roden's Trains to the Trenches are modern books.

Britain's' Railways in the Great War was published in 1967.

Rob Langham's book is specific to the North Eastern Railway, however, I think many aspects of that company's operation would be similar to other railway companies.

Transportation on the Western Front, by Lt-Col A F Henniker - a volume in the British Official History series.

It may be available online, but a quick search on Google didn't show up any such sources.
