peteg Posted 12 March , 2005 Share Posted 12 March , 2005 I have the MIC for my Gt Uncle, Miles Houghton (11676) RFA. On it is the following info. 7th DAC, (must have been BAC in 1914). B.S.M, WO 1st class, Captain. Qualifying date. 6/10/14 (Is that when he went to France ?) Commissioned 16/8/15 (Is that to WO 1st cass ?) Would he have been with a particular Brigade and Battery, if so how can I find out, or do any numbers on the MIC refer to this ? Two other dates on the MIC are "1-V-3560 C dated 2/3/20" and "1-V-X/3224 d/3-5-21" Any clues there ? I believe that 22nd and 35th Brigades were with 7th Div from 1914, but which battery ? Any info appreciated, Regards, peteg
rflory Posted 13 March , 2005 Share Posted 13 March , 2005 Lieutenant Miles B Houghton, RFA Born on 7 Feb 81 Served in the ranks for 14 years, 174 days Served in France and Belgium from 3 Oct 14 to 28 Aug 15 Served as Warrant Officer, Class 2 (Battery Serjeant Major) for 200 days Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, RFA on 16 Aug 15 "for service in the field." Promoted to Lieutenant, RFA on 1 Jul 17 Awarded 1914 Star with clasp, British War Medal and Victory Medal Retired as a Lieut. on 17 Jun 20 Captain, Retired Pay in 1924 If the MIC mentions the 7th DAC as his unit, then that is the unit he served with in 1914. Yes, there were BACs but according to Becke's Order of Battle of British Divisions the 7th Division also had a 7th DAC in 1914, which according to the 1914 Star rolls went to France on 6 Oct 1914. He does not appear to have served overseas after 28 Aug 15. If you have his medals, I would be interested to know how the BWM and VM are named. According to the everything I know they should be named to him as a BSM and not as a Lieutenant. Regards. Dick
peteg Posted 13 March , 2005 Author Share Posted 13 March , 2005 Hi Dick, Many thanks for your reply regarding Miles. Very much appreciated. I didn't even know he had a middle name as 1881 and 1891 census reports give only Miles with no reference to the "B". The information is great. Thanks again. Regards, Pete. rflory Posted 13 March , 2005 Share Posted 13 March , 2005 Pete: Actually the "B" in his name is a typing error on my part - not sure how that happened. His name in the Army List is given as "Miles Houghton." Sorry. Dick
