roger Posted 12 March , 2005 Share Posted 12 March , 2005 Anyone come across this chap? He recieved the Italian Croce di Guerra so I suspect he was in either the 10th or 11th Bns. 168th brigade 23rd Div. Any help will be appreciated. Roger. charlesmessenger Posted 12 March , 2005 Share Posted 12 March , 2005 Not only was he awarded the Italian War Cross, but the DSO as well. The London Gazette 15 Oct 18: For conspicious gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack. He was in command of a company and held his trench, though his left flank was absolutely exposed, against all attacks throughout the day. Both during the preliminary enemy bombardment and in the hand-to-hand fighting he set a very fine example of courage and coolness to his company. His forenames were James William and he was also mentioned in despatches on 22 May 17, 17, 18 Dec 17, 30 May 18, and 6 Jan 19. Alas, I don't know his battalion. roger Posted 12 March , 2005 Author Share Posted 12 March , 2005 Charles, I can't thank you enough. I agreed to see if I could find out anything about Captain Hunter for a friend. It was thought he had won a DSO but my search on the London Gazette web site proved fruitless. I found the Italian War Cross award but I somehow missed the DSO and MiD. Thank you again, Roger.
