Remembered Today:

Coatbridge and the Great War

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have been in charge of the Coatbridge and the Great War website for nearly 3 years. I'm currently updating the men's pages and I have 100 of 864 still to update. I'm looking for help regarding 22 men listed. Some are possible duplicates and others I have as not remembered by the CWGC. This site is listed in acknowledgements as I've had a lot of help here over the many years I've been looking to complete the Memorial. Sadly had to wait a long time to get website sorted but any help with what I'm looking for would e appreciated and thanked for on the man's page. I have around 780 grave photos and names on memorials and plan on doing my best to have all men listed. Thanks in advance. Here is the site

John,

What an excellent website with which to host your research. If only every City, town and village had such a well researched resource.

Have you a link to the 22 you mention, or are they only spread among the directory?

Cheers,
Derek.

Thanks John,

I'll have a look over them.

[edit] have your men missing off CWGC been forwarded to them for inclusion?

Cheers,
Derek.

Thanks Derek,

I'm planning to do that with the CWGC. My plan at the moment is to have all 864 men's pages updated by Remembrance Day (also around 3 years of the website). I'm also going to look to get all this information available as I've found a lot of relatives just by post on a Coatbridge FB page. Will be meeting local MSP when I'm home in November

I have added some possibilities on Coatbridge site, apologies if previously checked.

Some confusion in WFA Pension Records with wife's details when compared to CWGC Entry.

Coatbridge Address - sorry I don't have links.

Thomas Scott STEWART, 43699, Gordon Highlanders

Cards at WFA/Fold3

Provides his full name

Claimed an unspecified disability pension - from Chryston [not far from Coatbridge]

image.png.ce21ecced58a48e5c005775952182178.png

Related card with an additional number of 29814 [both also reflected on his MIC]

image.png.11045d28ead3e597f1e900141f9f87be.png

BWM & VM Medal Roll likely to offfer more details on the Cameron Highlanders, S/29814

From his full name at ScotlandsPeople https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

And hazarding a presumtive guess or two I think possibly his 1892 birth

  • STEWART  THOMAS SCOTT  M  1892  639/ 283  Dalziel

and death

  • STEWART   THOMAS SCOTT  75  1967  643/ 235  East Kilbride

and his marriage

  • STEWART THOMAS SCOTT    GEDDES    JANET MONTGOMER      1920  626/A2 31  Cadder (Eastern)  [Seems quite likely to give his post-war occupation and other details]

There is also a Service Return death in 1942 for a similarly-named man aged 20 - possibly his son?? [A Kirkcaldy birth for him seems potentially likely]

= Some follow-up seems necessary to check these biog details.

I have a few uncommemorated men from Coatbridge...

  • ASHWOOD, Isaac 5767 Black Watch, died 20 Mar 1921
  • FERGUSON, Archibald 21179 Royal Scots Fusiliers, died 5 May 1921
  • MOORE, John 6933 Labour Corps, died 18 Jan 1921

There is also William ENTWISTLE who was recently added to CWGC, perhaps through your efforts?
