Greetings all. I am writing a book about the Gallipoli campaign, and am trying to locate French accounts of the Gallipoli campaign written in English. Can anyone provide me with some guidance?

Many thanks in advance,

Try, "Uncensored Letters from the Dardanelles." Written to his English wife by a French Medical Officer of Le Corps Expeditionnaire d'Orient.

Published Heinemann 1916.

To be honest, apart from the one Bob has mentioned, I have never seen any others in English. There are plenty in French, but they are all out of print and were published (largely by the Payot company) in the 20s and 30s.

"Gunner Depew" by Albert N Depew, published 1918, covers service with the French Navy and French Foreign Legion on Gallipoli.

I would be very much interested to buy a book in French on the Gallipoli campaign (not just in French of course ... with the French point of view)

I have heard about Les poilus d'Orient / Pierre Miquel but apparently not very accurate and rather recent.

I would actually be interested in purchasing a book in line with the ones in Martin's list. Published in the 1920's.

They never come on e-bay ... Does somebody know a place where I could look for these ???

Thanks in advance

eric

Dear Eric,

Try this website:

https://www.tomfolio.com/

I just ordered Gunner Depew there this week, for under $10.00.

Regards,

Pat

Many thanks for the list. I managed to find Gunner Depew for under $10.00 online this week. I've also been able to order UNCENSORED LETTERS FROM THE DARDANELLES BY A FRENCH MEDICAL OFFICER TO HIS WIFE through interlibrary loan. The author was Major Joseph Vassal, the medical officer of the 6th Mixed Colonial Regiment. That's an EXCELLENT read.

As an FYI, I've found only one French account in English in the Liddle Collection, by a man captured on April 25 at Kum Kale. It's a good one, though.

Regards,

Pat
