Maricourt Posted 9 August , 2021 Share Posted 9 August , 2021 (edited) In memory of the Penmaenmawr Quarry Boys who landed at C Beach, Suvla Bay, Gallipoli on the 9th August, 1915 and went into battle the following day led by the Quarry Manager, Major Gus Wheeler, who was killed in action around 5.30pm on the 10th August leading a bayonet charge. Ordinary lads who answered the call to arms they, and all the Pen Boys that never made it home from various theatres of war, are not forgotten: "They lie a long way from their beautiful, mountain home - Gorweddant ymhell o'u cartref mynyddig prydferth" Edited 9 August , 2021 by Maricourt missing word
Maricourt Posted 9 August , 2021 Author Share Posted 9 August , 2021 (edited) Not quite sure how three photos appeared but mods please alter if possible - if not enjoy the beautiful heather that is now out on the Mountain that the Quarry Boys would have walked past on their way to work. Altered! Edited 9 August , 2021 by Maricourt

Maricourt Posted 9 August , 2021 Author Share Posted 9 August , 2021 Thank You, Sadbrewer for the article and photo of Gus Wheeler - much appreciated. Not sure why the 12th is quoted - it is likely that the news reached the town on that date. Frank Mills - a great friend of Wheeler's records his death on the 10th in his diary. Many thanks ... Moriaty Posted 16 August , 2021 Share Posted 16 August , 2021 Over a century later and the Quarry Boys of the 6th RWF are still remembered. Buried and commemorated so far from home. Moriaty
