Hi - I wonder if anyone can help of this one as it's a new one to me.

I'm currently researching an Australian soldier who was admitted to hospital in France with what was described as "Gastro Alcoholic" - has anyone come across this before? Any ideas what it might be (google drew a blank).

As far as I can see, he had no other admissions to hospital and the only other health issue was bad teeth (which initially prevented him from joining up).

Any help greatly appreciated.

I think you are correct with your diagnosis Kath.

Alcoholic gastritis is when alcohol damages the stomach lining and can cause a variety of symptoms from abdominal pain to vomiting. Alcoholic gastritis may not always present immediate symptoms, but over time, it can eat away at the body's digestive tract.

Thanks both - I think this sounds right. I guess we'll never know whether this was as a result of army life or a slow burn from civilian life.

The other consideration could be the developing alcoholic hepatitis, if the gastric tract was breaking down it is likely that there would be significant liver damage and a jaundice presentation
