derekb Posted 31 July , 2021 Share Posted 31 July , 2021 Just a guess - perhaps the Pickelhaube was originally fitted with a Guard regiment badge with a wider wing spread?

Collectors don't like "pricked" helmets (an extra hole to fit another helmet plate) as this was often done to "improve" the helmet or to fit on a plate that was missing but of a type that the seller didn't have. I also understand there are examples of "approved" in service repairs which involve pairs of 1"-ish circular patches on the inside supporting smoothed leather "plugs" where a re-alignment was necessary ...... or is that another tall tale?
