michaeldr Posted 15 July , 2021 Share Posted 15 July , 2021 I understand that the archway was preserved by Robb when the White Hart Hotel was demolished to make way for their department store. The following pages are from Brian Tilley's book 'Tynedale in the Great War' published by Pen & Sword [ISBN 978 1 47382 801 8] They give an outline of the service of the three Robb brothers; the sons of JTR. p2

michaeldr Posted 15 July , 2021 Share Posted 15 July , 2021 (edited) Another snippet from Brian Tilley's book concerns the mascot of the 4th NF; Sammy. He was a Border Terrier cross, raised by Lance Corporal George Urwin and adopted by the men during training. Sammy fell victim to friendly fire at Warfusee, Belgium, during a practice fire. Company Commander Ridley Robb arranged for the body to return to the UK where it was given the professional attentions of P Spicer & sons, taxidermists of Leamington Spa, and Sammy continued to grace the Drill Hall, Hexham, for another 70 years.
