risca_boy Posted 25 June , 2021 Share Posted 25 June , 2021 I'm trying to trace the action that William Durward OSBORNE was involved in, which merited him being awarded the Military Medal. He served with the 14th then 9th Royal Welch Fusiliers. Service number 18181. His award was in the London Gazette 13.9.18. Although I have found citations for other MM winners I can't find anything for this man. I've looked through the 9th Bn War Diary but couldn't see anything in there, although others who were awarded the MM were named. Thanks
Ivor Anderson Posted 25 June , 2021 Share Posted 25 June , 2021 Williamson states that the LG of 13.09.1918 was for 'minor operation March to June 1918'. Have you checked the WD that far back? Osborne's MM schedule no. was 183752 when he was with the 9th Bn: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6203859
risca_boy Posted 25 June , 2021 Author Share Posted 25 June , 2021 Thanks Ivor. I have looked back through the war diaries but there is no mention of him. Can I ask who Williamson is?
Ivor Anderson Posted 25 June , 2021 Share Posted 25 June , 2021 (edited) Howard is the author of this great volume, and several other very useful WW1 books that are specifically about the MM: Edited 26 June , 2021 by Ivor Anderson
Ivor Anderson Posted 25 June , 2021 Share Posted 25 June , 2021 (edited) You may find his MM listed in this 19th Division war diary: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C14053942 There are no guarantees, but there are often lists of honours and awards in Divisional AQMG diaries. Ivor Anderson Posted 26 June , 2021 Share Posted 26 June , 2021 (edited) That's a great result! A place and date(s) of the action specified too. You can now reread the Bn. war diary for 10-18th April 1918. Glad to have been able to help. Ivor Edited 26 June , 2021 by Ivor Anderson
