Remembered Today:

The fort of Kara Burum, Salonika

Hi. I have come across a bit of information that states, 28th January 1916, the allies occupy the cape and fort of Kara Burum commanding the harbour of Salonika.  I have looked in my books and maps but can not find any reference to this fort. Any help  with this would be greatly appreciated . Thank you

There are 2 references to Fort Kara Burun in the Official History Volume I; page 88 in December 1915 General Sarrail demands that the Greeks hand over the fort and the battery at the mouth of the river Vardar  and page 100 General Sarrail requests assistance from General Mahon and informs the Greeks he will take the fort by force if necessary. In the event the occupation of the fort passed off quietly then next day.

This is a real help. Many thanks for this information. I am responding an Italian warship named piemonte. She was based in and around salonika and took part in landing Mariners there to take the Fort.

Hi Sarge,

I managed to find it in the top corner of the Austrian map 40 40:

This is near Angelochori here on Google maps:

Angelochori

The Greek name for the fort is Megalo Emvolo (or Embolo) which is close by.
