ianw Posted 6 March , 2005 Share Posted 6 March , 2005 The 90th anniversary of this terrible crash is coming soon. Do any Pals know if any special ceremonies are planned ? Are all the troops buried in Rosebank Cemetery ? Are they in a mass grave ? The story of this crash is really tragic. Sheer negligence on behalf of railway signalling staff compounded by huge bad luck. The troop train impacted a stationary local train at 70 mph. This compacted the troop train to approx one quarter of its length and the resultant wreck was then ploughed into by another express ! Many stories about the aftermath. Men put out of their misery by their comrades, self amputations to escape the fire and canny blokes taking to their heels then presumed dead and hidden by their families for the duration - not sure about this latter one given the early time in the war but it is reported to have happened. Terry Denham Posted 6 March , 2005 Share Posted 6 March , 2005 Ian A number of casualties from the disaster are buried elsewhere where their relatives so requested.

Malcolm Posted 9 March , 2005 Share Posted 9 March , 2005 Are all the troops buried in Rosebank Cemetery ? Are they in a mass grave ? To answer your questions. The vast majority are buried in Rosebank although some are in family plots nearby and in some other cemeteriies. The men in Rosebank are in one mass grave. I have not heard of any remembrance service but I'll attempt to find out. Aye Malcolm
