BIFFO Posted 29 March , 2021 Share Posted 29 March , 2021 i have the 15 trio of a chap joined R.A.M.C service no 37703 went off to war 04-06-1915 to 19th General hospital Alexandria, where I think he served until he joined 147th Field Ambulance base depot at El Arish Egypt, until May 1918, part of 75th Division, why would he then join 7th battalion R.W.F service no 93040. Why would you move from a medical unit to a fighting unit?
ss002d6252 Posted 29 March , 2021 Share Posted 29 March , 2021 Later in the war a lot of fit men were pulled out of the support units to refill the infantry, he may have been a victim of that. Craig
Guest Posted 29 March , 2021 Share Posted 29 March , 2021 Following on from Craig- yes, combed out-as all the support services away from the immediate front line were-more than once from 1916 onwards mainly. A glance at his entry on the Medal Roll (I am away from Ancestry) may show others round about him with similar mixed backgrounds and transfers to 7RWF
Admin kenf48 Posted 29 March , 2021 Admin Share Posted 29 March , 2021 The service record of 23049 Sutcliffe has (more or less) survived and shows he was in a cohort compulsorily transferred from the RAMC to the 1/7th RWF on 6th July 1918 whilst serving with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. His transfer would seem to coincide with the 'Indianisation" of the 53rd (Welsh) Division he had previously served with 30 FA in Salonika and ended up at the Base Depot in Egypt in May 1918. The number range from the RAMC to the 7th RWF 93001 - 93169 (seems some of the later numbers went via the Cheshire Regt. Should be able to find more records. I'm off to watch telly!
