Thomas Jones Posted 25 March , 2021 Share Posted 25 March , 2021 (edited) Hi, Going through Ancestry, we discovered another relative who was in the Royal Engineers, John Drinnan born c1890. His daughter was baptised in Bangor Catherdral and their address looks like 5 Panton St. which is in Hirael, Bangor. I cant find him on the Bangor Roll of Service to confirm his service number, so must have been born somewhere else. The service record has not survived by the looks of it either. The possible numbers I have for him are : John Drinnan Royal Engineers (T)8557, 426402 (most likeliest) 425721 724, A425721, 665116. His wife was Margaret Catherine Drinnan (nee Caddock Evans of Llanddona, Anglesey). Married in last quarter of 1916. so would have been home on leave we assume. I have a couple of MIC's but nothing to confirm if this is the Bangor John Drinnan. Help with this would be great if there is anything on him. Pension Records at WFA/Fold3 reveal addresses: 426402 - 15 Elizabeth St., Farnworth or 19 Daubhill St, Farnworth 425721 - 2 Anderson Drive, Renfrew A425721 - number seems a duplication of above ??? :-) M
Thomas Jones Posted 25 March , 2021 Author Share Posted 25 March , 2021 Thanks Matlock. We do have links with Farnworth so will look down that route, cheers, T
clk Posted 25 March , 2021 Share Posted 25 March , 2021 (edited) Hi Tom, Perhaps only circumstantial, but the birth certificate seems to say "West Lancs RE", and the service number 426402 falls within the 1917 (re)number block associated with the units of 1 West Lancs Field Companies - link. brianmorris547 Posted 25 March , 2021 Share Posted 25 March , 2021 (edited) And 425721 was previously 724 RFA with a 1914 -15 Star date of 25/06/1915 (2b) so he served in Gallipoli. He also has a SWB. I agree 1/1 WL FC RE (4 Div up to 27/02/1916 then 55 Div - later 419 FC). Recruits to the WLD RE were named in the Bolton papers in 1915. I checked my lists of those who enlisted into the Bolton Artillery and by chance I have 26 names from August and September of men who enlisted into the WLD RE, but John Drinnan is not on them. He may well be named elsewhere in Rally to the Flag in the Bolton papers. Bolton library also holds the Farnworth Journal. Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 26 March , 2021 Share Posted 26 March , 2021 Hi Tom, As Clive says @Hywyn is the Bangor Go To Man. He may have something in the AVL or in his extensive newspaper records. I've walked up that street hundreds of times and never known its name until now.

Hi Dai, Yes Panton Street is one of those streets where only parking happens 😊 I had a cluster of family living in that area. 2 Caddock-Evans' sisters, originally from Llanddona lived there and in one lived in 2 London Place which is just round the corner with Thomas John Williams 13682. Looking at the baptism page, Panton Street sisters Margaret and Dora both lived in 5 Panton Street while the men were at War and baptised their children on the same day in Bangor Cathedral.
