Dear Forum Pals,

I am currently trying to get a better understand of the opening months of the Great War. I have just read "Retreat and Rearguard 1914" by Jerry Murland. Can anybody recommend a book which covers the period from the first battle of the Marne to First Ypres? Any ideas would be appreciated.

regards,

Private Price

Fifteen Rounds A Minute  edited by JM Craster is a favourite of mine, the Grenadiers at War.

I will have a look at the 1914 books I inherited from Dad and see if any other gems spring to mind. There's 3 shelves to pick from.........he liked the Edward Spears books I recall.

Michelle,

That would be appreciated. I have read Liaison 1914 which I really enjoyed. Just trying to get a better understanding of how we got from the Marne to 1st Ypres.

Stuart

Here’s the relevant shelves. Hopefully you can make out the titles.

Michelle, Maureene, Robert,

Sorry for the slow reply. PC problems have not helped. I just wanted to say many, many thanks for the ideas and for the great pictures with ideas for which extra books to read or websites to use. I did not realise that there were so many books on that part of the war. Seems like I will be pretty busy for the next few weeks going through them.

regards,

Stuart.

Black Maria,

Grateful thanks for pointing out this series of posts, which is on exactly the same topic that I was asking about. I will go through the many replies and see which books stand out.

regards,

Stuart.

Stuart,

If you don't run out of bookshelf space or money i'd add "Challenge of Battle" by Adrian Gilbert.
In my opinion the best book on 1914 in recent years.

It was available in the N and M.P. sale recently at a very good price, now on my to be read pile.

Derek and Mikey,

Thanks for the additional recommendations. I will have a look and see which one suits me best. This one does sound like it could be a winner!

regards,

Stuart.
