A couple of candidates for your research Steve:

From H.M. S. AGAMEMNON IN THE MEDITERRANEAN - p.176, 'The Naval Review' Vol.IV

“At 8.30 a.m. on March 19th [1916] left [Mudros] for Malta escorted by H.M.S. Beagle, with the following prisoners:- Sub-Lieutenants Walter Irman and Fritz Hemich, German aviators captured off Thaso, S. Ladondaki, suspect Ottoman Greek doctor, one Bulgarian, two Turkish and one Greek suspects.”

See Charlie's post below correcting the spelling of the names

correct spellings of the names are Irmen and Hennig

Many thanks indeed for that vital correction Charlie.

The author here was the Agamemnon's captain, Fyler; ironically, someone whose own name is often misspelt.

This can be added to his other howlers, which include his reference to one battalion (see p. 135) as 'the New South Wales Borderers'!

Title now corrected

regards

Michael

  • michaeldr changed the title to PoWs: Walter Irmen & Fritz Hennig

Now that Charlie has pointed out the correct spelling of the names, a further search of the GWF reveals that these two have been mentioned here before;

Sub-Lt. Walter Irmen was allocated Malta PoW No.1905 and following an attempt to escape, he was transferred to Egypt on 4th April 1918, after which I have no more information.

Flmt. Fritz Hennig was allocated Malta PoW No.1906 and seems to have had a quiet life interned at Malta. He was repatriated on 6th December 1919 with 1100 German PoWs held at Malta.”

It is perhaps worth noting that Walter Irmen is recorded as Arthur Irmen in the Verlustlisten and also in the Geheime Verlustlisten.

I have no details on the aircraft flown from Xanthi but a number of men from the (Wasserfliegerabteilung) I Seeflieger-Abteilung open it up to bring another area to attack the British instead of just from the Dardenelles.

These men were all part of the hit back against British/French air attacks against Ottoman Targets, from there bases on the former Ottoman and Greek Islands off the Ottoman coast

Interesting area.
