Michael Lowrey Posted 26 February , 2021 Share Posted 26 February , 2021 UB 30 was en route to Flanders on February 23, 1917 when it ran aground on the Dutch island of Walcheren. The submarine eventually got unstranded on its own, but by then Dutch torpedo boats had arrived, and the U-boat was forced to put into Vlissingen to determine why he had entered Dutch waters. It took awhile, but finally on August 8, 1917 UB 30 was released from internment and made her way to Flanders.
Guest Posted 27 February , 2021 Share Posted 27 February , 2021 Michael, Thanks again mate interesting story there. I wonder why they were not intern for the war? Cheers S.B
Michael Lowrey Posted 27 February , 2021 Share Posted 27 February , 2021 Steve, The dividing line between interned for the war and being later released is whether the vessel could get off again by its own power. If tugs had to be called in, it was interned for the war, if it could free itself, it was (eventually) released. Michael

Simon Schnetzke Posted 11 February Share Posted 11 February Hi Steven, what‘s your source for his command as a WO on U 15? I have him as a WO on U A only. Additionally, he was commander on UB 5, UC 28, UB 11 and UB 38 too. Best wishes, Simon
