Remembered Today:

Baines brothers

The inscription on 2Lt. George Baines Middx & 48RFC's headstone in Etaples MC states that he was one of three who died, out of seven brothers who served. One of the other brothers is Capt. Joseph Baines 20Mx. Can anyone identify the third one, please?

The Baines brothers: William, Thomas, Joseph, George, Ralph, Arthur and John.

The third brother killed may be John the youngest. There is one 2/Lt John Hugh Baines with the 10th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment kia 03/07.16 with no added details commemorated on Thiepval.

I think Myrtle may be right as in 1901 Census John Baines (brother of George and Joseph) was 8 years old born Putney. Putney is in the registration district of Wandsworth. There is a birth registered in the Wandsworth district Dec Qtr 1892 (per Free BMD) of a John Hugh Baines. I can't find any other John Baines aged about 8 years at the time of the 1901 Census who would fit as being born in the Wandsworth registration District. Not cast iron proof I know.

Myrtle & Pam,

It seems most likely you're right, thank-you. It's amazing how many three, or even more brothers perished.

Bob,

Another example would be the four Bell brothers from Newcastle who all perished.

2nd Lt T H A Bell

Sgt J J Bell DCM

1st Class Boy W Bell

Merchant Seaman A Bell.

Bob,

Thank-you for the Bell brothers. I started in my naievity thinking pairs of brothers was a terrible thing (of course, it is) but 'collecting' them became ridiculous, there were so many, so I now keep a look-out for 3 or more. I know most of the 'famous' ones, but would be very interested in others, please,

Three brothers from the village of Grasby died in WW1

Cpl 99056 Arthur Frank Wescott; RFA; Age 20; 13th Nov 18

Cpl 9828 Elton Harry Wescott; 6th Lincs; Age 23; 15th Aug 15

Sjt 9580 Edward Lawrence Wescott; 8th (formerly 1st) Lincs; Age 22; 11th May 17

I think that only four men are listed on the village memorial and three of them are the above brothers

Sad story

Chris, Why can I find all 3 Westcott brothers perfect in every detail on SDGW, but cannot find one on CWGC?

Northern Soul,

thank you. What puzzles me is since your information I have put the Westcotts in again on CWGC & they STILL didn't come up, unless you go via cemetery when even then EL at Etaples seems to be missing!

Steve, Again thanks I did know of the Souls's boys & I think there are at least 2 other sets of 5 without checking my lists!

Bob

have you got the spelling right, its WESCOTT not WESTCOTT. Have just tried with WESCOTT and WW1 as the only fields filled in on CWGC and all three come up.

Hope that helps you find them

Regards

Chris,

Thank you, I missed Myrtle's earlier posting as she so pointedly remarks, perfection is not one of my few attributes,

Kevin,

Thank you, but I'm a little confused, some of the details seem to have got transposed.

I've found the Fleury boys, but the only Cheyne I can find on CWGC & SDGW is William. Two of the Brennocks have the Cheyne details i.e.

Wm. Brennock 1IrGds 6.11.14.

Thos. Brennock Sgt. 1RDub Fus 28.2.17 & I can't find Sgt. James.

Having been stupid earlier in this thread I've double checked spelling & numbers, but it remains as I've said,
