Guest Jaxxon Posted 2 March , 2005 Share Posted 2 March , 2005 Hi all: Doing some digging on my grandfather, since not a heck of a lot of info has been past down I'm going by what I have so far. So, while searching a "sure thing" the Medal Role, I discovered that Pte Henry Jackson, #19356 of the Lancashire Fusiliers, entered "Theatre of War" 2.B. on 20.09.1915. Facts that I know are that he joined Lancashire Fusiliers in April 1915 and his Reg was #19356. What I would like to know is, what is theatre 2.B. and what Brigade he would have been in? I've been told he served in Gallipoli, Egypt, France and Belgium. He raised a family in Noranda Quebec, Canada and wrote an extensive column in the local newspaper, a yet untapped resource
Guest Hill 60 Posted 2 March , 2005 Share Posted 2 March , 2005 Welcome to the Forum. Theatre 2b was Gallipoli and Islands of Aegean Sea, between midnight 24th/25th April 1915 and midnight 9th/10th January 1916.
Guest Jaxxon Posted 2 March , 2005 Share Posted 2 March , 2005 Thanks Clan Dhai: You given me a bit more to work with. Now to figure out Battalion he signed up with. Being from the Dalton area should help narrow that down a bit more.
Chris_Baker Posted 2 March , 2005 Share Posted 2 March , 2005 Only way to do this is look up the medal rolls (the references are given on the MIC you have), and look for his service papers.
Paul Reed Posted 2 March , 2005 Share Posted 2 March , 2005 Given his number it is most likely he served with the 1st Battalion, which was part of the 29th Division.
Guest Jaxxon Posted 3 March , 2005 Share Posted 3 March , 2005 <S> agian, This place is full of amazing stuff, gotta say I'm a bit overwhelmed. Where do I find these Medal Rolls? Info from his MIC. Victory ~ H/1/101 B12 ~ page 2559 British ~ Do ~ Page Do 15 Star ~ H/1/53B ~ Page 65 There is also, in the remarks area, a rubber stamped 3 JUN 1981. He died of natural causes in 1979 aged 81. Chris_Baker Posted 3 March , 2005 Share Posted 3 March , 2005 The original medal rolls are held at the National Archives in Kew, London. They are not available on line.
Paul Reed Posted 3 March , 2005 Share Posted 3 March , 2005 There is also, in the remarks area, a rubber stamped 3 JUN 1981. That indicates someone wrote to the Medal Office on that date to make an enquiry about him.
Blackblue Posted 6 March , 2005 Share Posted 6 March , 2005 My guess is 9th Battalion. Seems to be consistent with the Service battalion numbering. Tim D
