Article on interpreting War Diaries

Has anyone seen a good article or a guide on exactly how the war diaries were to be completed?

 

I realize that this may seem self-evident to some, but in the case of the 3rd C.M.G.C. it can get confusing.

 

I've transcribed one of the war diaries of the 3rd Battalion C.M.G.C. and am getting a bit confused as to whether the Place column always represents the Divisional HQ or the Battalion HQ, because sometimes they can be in the same place and the Summary of Events and Information column sometimes mentions both.. I really want to be sure that the Place column is always the location of the 3rd Battalion HQ and not the Divisional HQ.

I've consulted many War Diaries and my experience is that the Place column is the location of the War Diary's unit.
