FROGSMILE Posted 20 January , 2021 Share Posted 20 January , 2021 (edited) It reads Sgt Dmr so Sergeant Drummer. The capital D has a flamboyant loop at top. This was an appointment title changed from Drum-Major before WW1, when the status of the position was downgraded, but it was always an unpopular change and between the two wars the original title was restored, from memory before the 1920s were out, although he (the Drum-Major) never regained quite the same high status that the position once held. I would normally expect to see it annotated somewhere, although you must remember that it was his appointment, i.e. a sergeant appointed as sergeant drummer (as in head of the drums).
