M.I.D. - When Where Why ??

One for those more experienced than myself, is it possible to "extract" any further info as to when, where, why, with which unit, from a MID notation on a MIC, other than the fact he was MID ??

If in fact that is what the "EM" means.

TIA.

Graeme,

That was fast ! Many thanks, had my money on it being in either of the other units, rather than the Labour Corps.

So does the date indicate, that the event was post war ??

Hi

I am no expert on this sort of thing but this is Haig's final despatch

https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/battles/british-field-commanders-despatches/sir-douglas-haigs-seventh-despatch-part-ii-advance-germany/

Looks like he may have received on of these

Regards,

Graeme

Graeme,

Thanks for the links, looks like the why he was MID will remain a mystery, as his unit did not keep a War Diary.

I can't see MID on the Medal Card. Is there a code?

There's a Family Tree on ancestry but no further explanation for MID.

Here is his Medal Roll entry, thanks to Ancestry:

As Merlin has posted,  Togwell was with 287 Area Employment Company and, War Diary or no, there must be some mentions of this unit somewhere that might elucidate what he did to be MID,

The only potential source that might-outside edge- add a bit of info. on what this unit was actually doing is the officer file at Kew, National Archives for this man:

His is the only name that comes up when running MIC against 287 Area Employment Company.  Gifford was South African-had served in German South West and came over at the end of 1915 and obtained  a British commission in KOYLI until January 1918 when he transferred to the Labour Corps. (Medals sold by Dix,Noonan and Webb,2003)

MID is very very frustrating indeed- I am in the same position with a Labour Corps man who was with a traction engine company humping and shumping heavy goods-Luckily, it has a war diary (367 Auxilliary Steam)- but on the evidence of my man's lack of detail, then Togwell would probably have remained an enigma anyway-war diary or no

The "EM" code on the image in my original post, means I believe "Emblem".

Yes, it shows when the emblem (the oak leaves) were issued, with issue voucher PY/E on 17/5/21.
